The Fascination of Chemistry (and everything else)

Wed May 11, 2005, 6:27 AM
I decided that I quite liked my mad ramble so I'm posting it here too ;) READ IT!!! And give it some thought!
---------------------------------------- --------------------------------

Chemistry has always fascinated me, not in the fact that it's very technical, but rather because of the fact that it is in reference to how this world operates. You see, if something relates to you, you automatically find it interesting

I always had the impression that science was against religion, but what I discovered was quite the opposite. Science does not disprove of a controlling force/creator (ie, God) but rather proves it. How?? Well, the fact that we exist is something quite remarkable in itself isn’t it??
Everything is constructed by how atoms react to each other. Even the fact that protons and electrons keep each other together is something of a miracle in itself. Such detail is quite mind boggling considering how miniscule the atom is. Coincidence?? Perhaps...perhaps not...
What amazes me even further is the fact that life was created from these atoms...or so we like to believe-->;a bolt of lightning strikes some molecules and voila we have a bacterium…but scientists haven’t actually achieve that yet…so where did life come from?? And to develop into a complex beings like ourselves can only prove one thing…there is something out there that made us…freaky isn’t it?? Evolution can explain to a certain extent, but to be truthful, it has its limits. Mutations?? To such a LARGE EXTENT?? To this day, I can’t say that there are many mutations that are advantageous to the human race, perhaps only one…like the sickle blood cell (but that only applies to carriers, not the people who have it in full which leads to anaemia)

“It is entirely in line with the accidental nature of mutations that extensive tests have agreed in showing the vast majority of them detrimental to the organism in its job of surviving and reproducing, just as changes accidentally introduced into any artificial mechanism are predominantly harmful to its useful operation . Good ones are so rare that we can consider them all bad.
-- H.J. Muller,”

I think mutations don't really go anywhere, and natural selection only can 'select' so much...since mutations are basically out of the question. The conclusion?? I'll leave that for YOU to decide.
---------------------------------------- -------------------
Take care, and give some thought to the amazing-ness of the world around you! Don't be blinded by what you take for granted...STOP and think and realise:)

"I can only show you the door...you're the one who has to walk through it..."

Toodles! :lick:

There are lots of positive mutations & subtle evolutions we have gone through as a species over the thousands of years we've been on the planet. I agree, lots & lots of negatives, there are a huge amount of syndromes, diseases & afllictions caused by genetic malfunction, but there are more positives than sickle cell carriers. The problem is that for us as a species it's hard to see evolution happening. It's not a process that occurs overnight, but in fact over hundreds of thousands of years.

The other theory regarding humans is that we're an evolutionary dead end. Which I believe, in it's way, supports both our viewpoints. In that, either humans are the end product a divine being was angling for, or that...we're not, we're just obsolete.

You're so sweet. :lick: You're right. Chemistry and everything else is fascinating. Sometimes the daily slog of school and inadequate and passionless teachers makes us forget that. We need to recreate the Renaissance fascination with art, science and life. :lmao: I for one have always obsessed over why negative numbers can be multiplied to make positive numbers! How?! Whadda whadda why?!
In my opinion schools should get a complete overhaul so students stop being annoying miniature rundown adults and get to learn everything they want! *twirl* Without the pressure of ridiculously excessive exams [glare latin]...and stupid curriculums [glare v.a.]...and crappy teachers [glare math teacher with black eye].
I wish I were a rich boy born in Venice during the Renaissance...sigh...anyways...nice tirade. Did you know ABC has a really good science program?...not that I suppose anyone under the age of 45 listens to it besides me...^^ 630 ABC radio sat/sunday nights around 11 pm (i listen to it as I'm going to bed)...hehe it's where you hear about stuff like how bits of Haley's comment showered down on earth recently and army food that soldiers rehydrate using waste water and urine. Hella of a good way to end your day...better than counting sheep.
Anyway, bye for now :) ---> keep the spirit alive!!!

Ok, let's turn the theory on it's head. Genetic mutation causes defects in the human body, from cancer to the rapid ageing syndrome, Progeria. Most are detrimental & lead to death or shortened life spans. In years gone by those mutated in such a way would die & not contribute to the gene pool therefore allowing the species to become stronger (survival of the fittest).

However, now they live, but perhaps there is purpose to it. We are attempting to find cures for these diseases & in so doing, we learn more about ourselves, what we are capable of being & becoming. 'Unnatural' evolution may be how human beings move forward...

You mean my ancestors? Well I reckon some of them got where they got to by bus...but I'm still very much in favour of mutation, environmental influences & the generally accepted version of what we know as, evolution. I am very biased however, I have a degree in Wildlife Conservation, a great amount of that degree concentrating heavily on evolutionary theory.

I recall a vicar saying on TV once that he believed evolution was a good explanation as to how we got where we are. Evolution explains how, but our faith, religion & belief in God, explains *why*. I thought that was a rather nice sentiment.
